Item Description
7x9" glossy designated Type 1 photo with exceptional full figure shot of Campy in full catcher's gear looking up to catch a ball. Stadium seats are filled in the background. Reverse has penciled notation regarding the image including date of 8/42, full "Acme Newspictures" ink stamp as well as additional hand written note regarding a later use of this image in Sport Life magazine. Campanella began playing Negro League baseball for the Washington Elite Giants in 1937. The team moved to Baltimore the following year. In 1939, with Roy a star player on the team, they won the Negro National Title. He would go on to become a superstar with the Dodgers (joining the team in 1948) as well as the first black catcher in the Major Leagues. A three time MLB MVP and 1955 World Series champion, he was inducted into the HOF in 1969. Scattered margin/corner tip wear mostly only visible in reflected light. Glossy and Fine. This photo offers a superb image early in his storied career.
