Campanella began playing Negro League baseball for the Washington Elite Giants in 1937. The team moved to Baltimore the following year. In 1939, with Roy a star player on the team, they won the Negro National Title. He would go on to become a superstar with the Dodgers (joining the team in 1948) as well as the first black catcher in the Major Leagues.
