Three letters involving three different lawsuits regarding Siegel and Shuster, “Li’l Abner” creator Al Capp, and his brother Jerome Capp. First is 8.25x11” two page typewritten letter to Al Capp dated October 27, 1947 from Jerry Siegel. Friendly letter mentions how much he and Joe enjoyed “Jack Jawbreaker” Sunday strip. Capp had brought a lawsuit after Scripps-Howard newspapers pulled his strip in Sept. 1947 for it’s liberal anti-Senate views. Siegel gives some comic book advice to Capp regarding reprints and how companies run crowded panels to save paying reprint fees. In 1946 Siegel and Shuster brought a lawsuit against DC Comics claiming rights to Superman and Superboy. He mentions that “Right Now Joe And I Are Going Quietly Nuts, Due To Our Opponent’s Stalling Tactics”. (their lawsuit wouldn’t get partially settled until the mid-1970s). Letter is signed “Cordially Jerry” w/his name in pencil. Both sheets have file holes at top w/oxidation at upper left from paper clip as stored in Capp’s files. Main body of letter is Fine. Likely written on the same typewriter Siegel used to write Superman stories. Next two typewritten letters are from 1952 to Jerome Capp regarding loans he had made to Joe Shuster, who was nearly penniless at the time. First is 7x10.25” on “Personal Finance Company” letterhead from manager John H. Yoe dated April 15. Letter notes Capp was a “Comaker” for Shuster in the amount of $ 300. Signed in ink at bottom. Red pencil check mark at left, two faint vertical folds as mailed. Fine. Next letter is 8.5x11” on lawyer Henry Portnow letterhead dated May 29. Letter notes “I Regret To Report , However, That Efforts To Date To Collect Said Loans Totaling $1,263.01 Have Been Unavailing”. He mentions “ The Defendant Is Presently Unemployed And States He Has No Assets”. Signed in ink at bottom. Top margin has dust streak and trace of oxidation, body of letter is Exc.
