Item Description
3.5x5.5". The prominent figure on this item is James Leslie Wilkinson who stands at center of the back row wearing suit and hat. He is surrounded by his players, which include several male players despite being billed as a women's team. Wilkinson is not only a member of the National Baseball HOF but a baseball pioneer on many levels. He is one of the most respected and influential figures in the history of black baseball as he helped found the Negro National League in 1920 and his team the KC Monarchs were one of the greatest of all Negro League franchises. During his ownership, the Monarchs won ten league titles and participated in four Negro League World Series, winning in 1924 and 1942. Wilkinson also signed Jackie Robinson to his first professional contract in 1945. This postcard represents the only known baseball image of Wilkinson. Back has been used and postmarked 1910. Lt. aging, few very faint surface creases, corner tip wear. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
