Item Description
Large 12.75x56.5" vintage frame (w/original glass) contains wonderful panoramic photo showing "Pennsylvania Division - Looking North - On The Border, Camp Stewart - El Paso, Tex. - 1916." Photo shows large military encampment, complete w/scores of soldiers' tents as well as several large wooden buildings under construction, likely for use as mess halls, given each building has stove pipe emerging from rooftop. In addition, several horse-drawn wagons are seen, as are horses and several soldiers. One can even been seen standing guard w/rifle slung over his shoulder at right. Encampment stretches into the distance and the Franklin Mountains can be seen in distant bkg. This encampment was part of the Pancho Villa Expedition, a military operation conducted by the US Army against the paramilitary forces of Mexican revolutionary Francisco "Pancho" Villa from March 14, 1916, to February 7, 1917, during the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920. Launched in retaliation for Villa's attack on the town of Columbus, NM, the declared objective of the expedition was the capture of Villa. Despite successfully locating and defeating the main body of Villa's command, US forces were unable to prevent Villa's escape. In addition to caption noted above, photo has copyright text noting "J.U. Medley & I. Shulman - El Paso, Tex." photographers. Left margin of photo has heavy and obvious moisture damage, w/two .25" pieces out and moisture staining. Some of of this is partially obscured by frame. 1.75" vertical tear at top center w/pin hole. Rest of photo has some scattered aging/handling wear. VG overall, but still nice for display. Due to size and/or weight of this lot, shipping charges may be substantial. Please contact us w/any shipping inquiries prior to close of auction.
