Item Description
10.75x11.5" original glossy silver gelatin photo is mounted to a slightly larger scrapbook page as compiled by Effa. Team is in uniforms and posed in three rows. Front row is Selton, Charles Parks, Clarence Israel, Biz Mackey (HOF), Bob Harvey, Leon Day (HOF). Middle row is Leon Ruffin, Warren Peace, Jim Wilkes, Bobby Williams, bat boy. Back row is Monte Irvin (HOF), Johnny Davis, Lennie Pearson, Len Hooker, Max Manning, Cecil Cole, Rufus Lewis, Larry Doby (HOF). This team won the 1946 Negro League World Series, their one and only such title, defeating the KC Monarchs in a seven game series. Left margin has a pair of ring binder holes w/reinforcements but neither impacts a player image. 1" tear by bottom hole punch. Right margin has moderate creases and wear. Other lt. margin and handling wear but remains bright, glossy and w/bold, sharp image. VG. Not totally mounted, so back can be viewed and has printing notations. The item was once part of Effa Manley's scrapbook and as such has notation in her hand done in ink (and comes with JSA COA verifying this). Written on front top is "The Newark Eagles Negro World Champions 1946" and at bottom is "Patterson's Picture Is Not Here. He Was A Great Help To The Team", a reference to Pat Patterson. Mounted on the reverse is a 8.5x11" page from Sept. 1946 magazine w/title "The Round-Up Of Sports" w/pair of photos showing both Effa and Abe Manely w/Eagles players including Leon Day and Biz Mackey. Written at the top of the page, again in Effa's hand, is "Victory Smiles" and she embellished the page w/rose stickers along the bottom Mag page has margin tear and tape repair at left center but still a nice complement to the team photo on front. The scrapbook page also had moderate margin wear w/chips and small tears but all writing is bold. Effa was a female sports executive and the first woman inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. She co-owned the Eagles with her husband Abe from 1935-1946 and was sole owner through 1948 after his death. This is a rare and desirable Negro League team photo further enhanced by the personalized nature and personal effect of a legendary HOF member.
