Item Description
17.25x25" original first printing thin paper poster for May 3, 1969 concert that took place at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada that featured The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Playing in Detroit, MI the night before this show, upon arrival in Toronto an illicit substance was discovered amongst Hendrix's luggage during a search by Royal Canadian Mounted Police, resulting in Hendrix being detained. It was questionable if the show would go on, but he was released on $10,000 bail at the last minute and escorted by police to Maple Leaf Gardens. The sellout crowd of 12,000 was the largest non-festival event Hendrix had preformed at to this point in his career. Despite the pre-show controversy, Hendrix's performance inspired the following review - "His Guitar Became The Voice Of The Rave New World. It Screamed, Hissed, And Shrieked With The Ferocity Of A Thousand Dentists Drills Plunged Into A Single Tooth." The arrest landed Hendrix on the cover of the May 31, 1969 Rolling Stone magazine. The incident weighed on Hendrix as the possibility of jail time could have effectively ended his music career. Returning to a Toronto court in June and again in December, Hendrix was acquitted of charges of drug possession on Dec. 11, 1969. The image of Hendrix, in mid performance, was created by local graphic artist Ray Bennett and only used on this poster. The design utilizes a dot pattern and features a bold profusion of psychedelic colors. Text at bottom reads "Hendrix!" w/show details in small text below including: date; acts including "Jimi Hendrix Experience With Noel Redding And Mitch Mitchell" and last line with ticket prices listed "$2.50/$3.50/$4.50/$5.50." Poster has some scattered handling creases along bottom margin and upper portion of Hendrix's image has 1/8" and 1/4x1/2" spots of surface paper lift, though this blends nicely w/dot pattern design. Still VF for display. The combination of history and spectacular imagery make this among the most outstanding Hendrix posters we have encountered. A truly rare and desirable artifact from the height of the legendary guitarist career.
