Item Description
The 1936 Summer Olympics (Olympische Sommerspiele 1936), officially known as the Games of the XI Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event held in 1936 in Berlin, Germany. It was this Olympics that Jesse Owens won four gold medals. Offered here is an actual second place silver medal awarded at these Olympics (not a participation medal as offered in the following lots; see 1936 participation medal, item #788), measuring 2" (55mm) dia. Designed by Professor Guiseppe Cassioli of Italy in 1928, the obverse of the medal features image of Victory seated above stadium holding palm branch w/raised "XI Olympiade - Berlin - 1936" text. Reverse features image of winner being carried aloft by jubilant athletes. This medal was awarded w/o ribbon as issued and was crafted by B.H. Mayer of Pforzheim, Germany as engraved on medal's rim. For this Olympics, only 320 silver medals were crafted. Prize medals were first awarded at the first modern Olympics in Athens, Greece in 1896. Given the limited production and athletic significance, Olympic medals are some of the rarest and most sought after sports artifacts in existence, as only around 2,000 medals are awarded during each Summer Olympics (w/400 awarded during Winter Olympics). Medal shows some lt. scattered wear w/a few small spots of discoloration, Fine. A rare chance to obtain a true piece of sports history.
