Item Description
1.25" with Bastian paper first used in 1907. Luna Park, Coney's second major park, opened in 1903. The Virginia Reel, characterized by circular spinning tubs that zigzagged down a track, exactly as shown on this button, was designed by Henry Elmer Riehl, who named the ride after his daughter, Luna Virginia Riehl. The ride opened in 1908 at Luna Park where Riehl was superintendent. Minor age tone on back paper. Front extreme upper edge has gray age stain blending well with background color between 11 and 12 o'clock. About 97% of the celluloid displays mint with full gloss and perfect center. One of four examples we've seen in our 50 years. Our last NM example exceeded $2,000. We grade this example as VF and it has a modest opening.
