Item Description
Evan Lewis (1860-1919) was an American professional wrestler who was the first recognized American Heavyweight Champion and is credited w/perfecting the "stranglehold" or "neck yoke" more commonly known today as the rear naked choke. Offered here is a 20x30" Chicago Banknote Company poster produced c. 1888 by "Parson" Davies Champion Specialty Company, Lewis' handler. Poster features great full body image of Lewis, w/his name at bottom along w/"The Strangler" moniker and "Champion 'Catch As Catch Can' Wrestler Of The World" promotional text. Pin holes and tiny tears at corners, w/.25x.5" spot of restoration at top center margin. Poster is evenly aged w/some scattered handling wear/dust soiling. Fine overall. Very rare. Great example of 19th Century wrestling advertising.
