Item Description
Major Malcolm Wheeler-Nicholson got into the comic book publishing business in early 1935 w/"New Fun" (see previous item). Despite somewhat weak sales, he decided to publish a second title. "New Comics" #1 appeared in late 1935 w/Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster working on the "Federal Men" storyline in early 1936 (w/contributions from Sheldon Mayer and Walt Kelly). "New Comics" became "New Adventure Comics" w/issue #12 (Jan. 1937) before becoming "Adventure Comics" w/issue #32 (Nov. 1938). Buttons and a certificate could be obtained by clipping a coupon from the comic. Offered here is a set of three "Special Operator" premium buttons that were obtained from "New Comics" and "Adventure Comics." .5x1" oval-shaped pinback button has winged shield design w/"New Adventure Comics Magazine - Junior Federal Men Club" text and "Special Operator" name above/below. Curl has Bastian Bros. name. Glossy and NM. This button was produced in two styles c. 1937, the oval-shaped previously mentioned as well as a 7/8" dia. round pinback w/same text and very slightly different winged shield. Button has tiny rim age dots but is still glossy and VF overall. Third button is 1" dia. w/different winged shield design and "Special Operator" designation. This button was issued c. 1939, after the title changed to "Adventure Comics" and text reflects this w/"Adventure Comics Magazine - Junior Federal Men Club" text. Hairline crack measuring .25" at left, but this blends somewhat w/text and is only noticeable upon close inspection. Still Fine overall. A rare and historic trio from the early days of DC Comics.
