Item Description
6-5/8x8.5" original glossy photo depicting Detroit Tigers Hall of Fame great, Hank Greenberg along with two gentlemen dressed in casual attire, most likely, in a foreign land. News service stamp on the back indicates photo credit to "International News Photo" along with a date stamp of July 9, 1944, placing it squarely inside the WWII era. Greenberg is dressed in full military uniform, US Army Air Forces, likely talking baseball with the two interested parties. A very small piece of a once attached newspaper article in Spanish remains adhered to the back, making it likely that the image was taken in a Hispanic location. Greenberg dedicated three of his prime athletic years to the U.S. Military, from 1942-44, returning to play his final three seasons with Detroit and Pittsburgh. Greenberg is widely regarded as one of the top first basemen of all time with a career batting average of .313 along with 331 home runs and 1,274 RBI's. Hank was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1956. Photo image exhibits excellent clarity with some paper residue and minor staining in the upper left quadrant. Back of photo shows remains of scrapbook removal, partly obscuring the new service stamp. Fine. From the Richard Merkin Collection and comes with Hake's COA.
