Item Description
1.75" with graphic portrait of youngster whose smile exposes missing teeth and depicted with exaggerated ears. Portrait strongly resembles likeness of MAD Magazine's Alfred E. Newman of later generations. See items #1046 and particularly #1047. Button has no backpaper the same as the other 4 examples we've seen in 4 decades. This example has some damage but still displays nicely. There is some tan age stain scattered around the outer rim edge with just a little noticeable on the lettering of the word "Soap" and a little darkening of the blue bkg. mostly on the lower right and just a bit on the boy's white collar. Across the neck and collar at the left is a .5" hairline cello crack although the cello still lays quite flat. In reflected light, there are a couple of other small scratches and the surface is the slightest bit uneven to the touch. Color remains strong and the piece still has nice gloss. We had an undamaged example in Auction #191 that ended at $1,200 plus the buyer's premium. While this example shows some age, it remains a stunning button and it has a most conservative opening bid.
