Item numbers 1429 through 3205 in auction 203
Item Description
c. 1925. Vintage stereo viewer presented by Carl Laemmle, head of Universal Studios, for initial release of the 1925 production of "The Phantom of the Opera". Faux alligator cardboard box holds 4x5x3/8" metal case which opens for use as stereo viewer. Comes with set of ten numbered cards, each 3.25x4.5", with photos from the movie and descriptive text of scenes shown on back of each. Camerascope inside bottom holds illustrated instruction folder which includes printed text at bottom "Compliments Of Carl Laemmle, Pres." with Universal Pictures Corp. 1600 Broadway New York City address. Consecutive card titles include "The Grand Staircase, Vengeance!, Christine Daae" showing Mary Philbin in the role, "The Opera Ball, The Foyer Of The Opera" showing Norman Kerry in the role of Raoul De Chagny, "The Seller Of The Headless Statue" showing Florine being choked by Simon after Florine terrorized ballet girls, "The Masked Opera Ball, The Phantom Interrupts The Ball" showing Lon Chaney as the Phantom coming down the staircase dressed as "Red Death", "Christine's Underground Boudoir", and "The Red Death!" showing Chaney as the Phantom about to kill the jester. Chaney's contract prohibited Universal from showing him unmasked in any of the pre-release material which is why no such scene is present on these cards. Each card has printed address at bottom of text Carl Percy, Inc New York City. Box is a bit worn around edges. VF. All cards are choice Exc/NM. Viewer itself is NM. Wonderful promotional item issued shortly before classic film's release. First we've seen in our 45 years. Extremely limited distribution, just given to theater owners. Historic.
