Item Description
This book is among the most important and valuable comics ever released. It contains the origin and first appearance of Captain Marvel. Published by Fawcett Publications, the book does not have a number on the cover and it lists #2 on the indicia. It is actually number #1 in the title’s run. The numbering sequence would correct itself by issue #5, solidifying this issue as the first one in the run. Formerly titled Captain Thunder, the hero was named Captain Marvel when he debuted for the first time on this issue’s cover. His creation was the work of the artist C. C. Beck and writer Bill Parker. Working together, they had already come up with Spy Smasher, Ibis the Invincible and several other Fawcett heroes. Captain Marvel would prove to be one of the most successful heroes of the Golden Age. He spawned a family of spin-off characters and several of them received their own title. Captain Marvel is also the first superhero to jump to the silver screen. In 1941, Republic released a 12-chapter serial. His incredible success made him a target for DC’s legal department, who considered him to be a rip-off of Superman. It took years for the suit to be finally settled. When it was, superheroes were dying as a viable genre and there wasn’t much left for Fawcett to fight over. Today, DC owns the character and every member of his human family. This issue contains a treasure trove of great Golden Age heroes. Starting with Ibis the Invincible, it also features Spy Smasher, Golden Arrow, Dan Dare, Scoop Smith, Sivana, and Lance O’Casey. The pages are off-white. The book is CGC-certified 7.0 (FN/VF). CGC lists the restoration as apparent, extensive and done professionally. Restoration on this issue includes: color touch, pieces added, tear seals, and reinforcement.
