Item Description
Spider-Man made his first appearance in the last issue of a canceled comic titled Amazing Fantasy. That comic had already undergone two title changes. It started as Amazing Adventures (#1-6), became Amazing Adult Fantasy (#7-14), and then for its final issue, it was shortened to Amazing Fantasy. The continuing thread throughout each issue was actually the art of Steve Ditko. According to an interview with Ditko, Stan Lee thought up the name and Ditko came up with the costume and the web on the wrist gimmick. After Spider-Man’s first appearance, Ditko and Lee ended up doing 38 issues of Amazing Spider Man and two annuals before the creative team changed. By the time that run was over, the grand majority of the Spider-Man mythos was in place. This issue is at the very beginning of that fantastic run. It features the origin and first appearance of Doctor Octopus. Ditko’s cover shrouds the villain’s appearance, leaving only the freakish site of his mechanical arms visible. It is a brilliant way to introduce this incredible villain. Doc Ock is so important that he went on to become the main villain in the second Spider-Man film. The issue also contains an appearance by the Human Torch. The pages are off-white. The book is CGC-certified 5.0 (VG/FN). CGC lists the restoration as apparent and slight amateur. Restoration on this comic includes a small amount of color touch on cover.
