Item Description
When folded, all kit items fit into 4.25x9.5” brown paper mailing envelope. Kit consists of six paper items plus tin litho “Tri-Tone” signal whistle. Lt. aging to envelope, but VF. 1x2.5” whistle also serves as membership badge with clip-on back. Whistle has small front area without gloss where it laid against "Defense Bulletin" paper. A thin 2" long streak of surface paper came off the paper when the two items were separated. Featured paper item is “Safety Guard Official Handbook” folder opening to 11x34” four page format. Extensive illustrations and descriptions of 18 premiums offered by Quaker Sparkies. Premiums pictured include: Altascope ring (see item #0), catapult plane, aviation training cockpit, Detecto kit, Whirlomatic Decoder, Blackout Flashlight, Magic Glowbird and RepeatingWater Pistol (see #0). Back cover has “Safety Guard Membership Certificate” to be cut out by owner. Two horizontal folds as mailed, o/w unused and Mint. Other kit items include fold-over letter to mother about “Safety Guard” and “Sparkies.” Mint. Next is fold-over “Whirlomatic Radio Decoder” with un-cut/intact dial. Mint. Next is “Be A Captain!” application blank. Mint. Next is fold-over “Gift Order Form” for “Orphan Annnie/Sparkies Premiums.” Evenly tanned. VF. Last item is “Special Safety Guard Defense Bulletin From Orphan Annie” text sheet with “Safety Guard Defense” pledge and 3-step defense program promoting good health and encouraging members to collect/save metals, rags, papers, etc. to support the war effort.
