Item Description
16.75x20.75" frame contains 6x16.5" color photo showing the Space Shuttle Columbia launching of STS-61-C, NASA's 24th mission of the Space Shuttle program, and the seventh mission of the Space Shuttle Columbia. The mission launched from Kennedy Space Center on Jan. 12, 1986, and landed Jan. 18. Display also includes photo of STS-61-C's seven-person crew which included the second African-American shuttle pilot (future NASA Administrator Charles Bolden), the first Costa Rican-born astronaut (Franklin Chang-Diaz), and the second sitting politician to fly in space (Rep. Bill Nelson). It was the last shuttle mission before the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster, which occurred just ten days after STS-61-C's return. Columbia would befall the same fate when it disintegrated during re-entry on Feb. 1, 2003. Display comes w/4x4.25" embroidered mission patch w/the names of the crew and Space Shuttle image and a 4-1/8x5.5/8" American flag, both of which were flown aboard Columbia during the mission. The primary objective of the mission was to deploy the Satcom K1 communications satellite. In addition to the photos, patch and flag, display has been signed by NASA astronaut Charles Bolden and was inscribed to American Ambassador to Belgium and later the United Kingdom Charles H. Price II as display was presented to "The Employees Of The American Embassy, London." Display has been professionally double-matted and is Exc.
