CPB HORSE RACING #105 to 107 COMPLETE SET OF "THE GREAT MATCH" BUTTONS.
Largest are 2.25" cello./smallest are 1-1/8" litho. These buttons were made for a July 6, 1975 event at Belmont Park that featured Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure, a stallion, facing off against Ruffian, a filly, in a much anticipated race. An estimated 20 million TV viewers along with over 50,000 spectators in attendance watched as tragedy struck when shortly after the first quarter mile bones snapped in Ruffian's right leg. Despite complicated orthopedic surgery Ruffian had to be euthanized not long after the race. These buttons were souvenirs of the historic match and are all NM displaying Mint.
