Item Description
Whitehead & Hoag issued this set of five buttons in 1897 and their catalog of that year offered it for 15 cents. They obviously issued the set twice as one version has the ships depicted against a green color sky background while second version depicts the same ships and same text against blue sky background. The white background set is complete. The blue background set is missing Puritan. The ships and their dates are "Defender 1895, Mayflower 1886, Puritan 1885, Vigilant 1893, Volunteer 1887." Eight of these have back paper from American Pepsin Gum while the ninth has W&H paper. A beautiful group with all NM displaying Mint.
