Item Description
2.5x4.25x1" deep block of elm wood. Three sides have affixed paper with notations most prominent of which reads "A Piece Of The Notable Elm Tree Under Which Wm. Penn Signed His Treaty With The Indians For The State Of Pennsylvania No. 333 Walnut St. Philadelphia June 10, 1682." Penn made the treaty with Native American tribes in 1682 under a large elm tree that stood in an area known as Shackamaxon near the Delaware river. For over a century the tree stood until a storm brought it down in 1810. The tree was preserved and objects were made from its wood including a box made for Chief Justice John Marshall in 1831. By 1861 these blocks were being sold as souvenirs that could be gifted. Significant wear to two of the three labels. Wood itself has minor pitting consistent with age. Overall VG. An interesting artifact pertaining to the history of the state of Pennsylvania and of the US.
