Item Description
About 16x20" titled "The Debilitated Situation Of A Monarchial Government". Features images of Jackson holding a "Treaty Of 1831" and Louis Phillipe holding a paper marked "Fortunate Speculation 25 Million". In the distance are several ships with two on the American sided named "Constitution" and "New Orleans" with the French sides named "Dido". In the treaty of 1831 France agreed to pay 25 million Francs to the US and in exchange the US agreed only to pay a small sum to cancel French claims against the government. The foreign policy victory would not last as France, locked into financial and political difficulties, could not come up with the sum needed to implement the treaty. This set off a flurry of rhetoric between the two nations. By February of 1836 Great Britain helped mediate a deal between the countries and by May the first of four payments from France had arrived. This print was made in response to that foreign policy crisis and is a striking representation of a fascinating bit of history. Four tiny minor tears at extreme upper left none larger than 1/2". Additionally one 1/2" tear at upper right and a 3/4" tear one third of the way down the left hand side. All tears are in the margin and could be matted out if framed. Otherwise only minor toning and handling wear. Image retains superior color and striking presence. Fine. Julie Powell Collection.
