Item Description
Each is about 3.5x5.5" and c.1917. Standing before White House driveway open gates are six women in long winter coats each wearing a sash and holding a large banner on a pole. Four of the banners are striped in the movements symbolic colors of green, white, and purple. Two other banners read "Mr. President What Will You Do For Woman Suffrage". Scene is captioned "White House Picket Of The Congressional Union For Woman Suffrage". Reverse has a personal message about packages in transit signed by "Josephine C. Locke". The card is addressed to Locke's lifelong companion Miss Elizabeth Kindsen whose relations consigned this pair of cards. Locke, who has a Chicago school named in her honor, was the supervisor of art in the Chicago Public Schools 1891-1900. She was progressive and championed free expression. She was a member of the National American Woman Suffrage Association and in later years strived to reform education through the woman suffrage movement. Second card has ink inscription on front reading "Pennsylvania Ave. Washington D.C." and is unused. VF.
