Item Description
Box is 2.25x2.75x.75" deep. Top reads "Popeye Watch" with creator's name "Segar" along lower edge. Side panel of box reads "Watch Division The New Haven Clock Co. Copyright King Features Syndicate, Inc., 1935" along with a series of patent numbers. Box lid has just a trace of age tone, tiny 1/16" dot of black color gone at center, and the right side panel has a vertical hairline split at the top and bottom corners, easily repairable if desired. Box is complete with its die-cut cardboard insert reading "Popeye Watch Nickel Finish." Insert has tiny bit of wear around the die-cut opening to hold the watch and a 1/8" split at the upper left but remains clean. Box bottom is intact and clean. Included is the 3x4" "Guarantee" folder which has a 1.75" vertical split at the center of the front sheet, having been folded in the box for many years. The watch itself is in a pentagonal case with rounded corners. The dial is gorgeous and essentially Mint picturing many characters from the strip alternating with designs of yellow triangles which surround the numerals. Popeye's die-cut arms with bold anchor designs and hands with pointing fingers tell the time while below his spread legs is a second wheel showing full figure of Wimpy chasing a hamburger accented by a tiny pair of wings as if it is flying from his grasp. The crystal in place is brand new to display the Mint dial but with the watch comes the original very yellowed celluloid crystal. The bezel, loop above the winding stem and outer edge of the case back have all lost most of the nickel plating but these areas are a very pleasing clean brass finish that blends well with the remaining nickel plating. Most importantly the condition of the dial is superb and essentially Mint. We have had the watch accurately running over a 24-hour period. About the third example of the watch we've handled and the first time we've seen the box.
