Item Description
In 1940, DC Comics ran a Superman contest promoted in Superman and Action Comics with 1600 of these rings used as prizes. The ring may also have been used as a give-away with the candy and gum promotions as well. Our total known in all conditions is 23 examples. The ring base is adjustable silvered brass with a pair of lightning bolts on one side and a planet design on other. The ring base silvering is 100% complete. The ring bands are a perfect circle. The ring top has a brass disk with image of Superman breaking a chain. Surrounding text reads “Supermen Of America/Member.” The background of the inscription is red paint and this color is the first thing to wear off of these rings. Without magnification, the 90% paint present on this example appears very close to 100% complete. This example is NM. Of the 23 known to us, only a single example grades Mint making this the second highest grade example known to us. See item #1122. From the Franco Toscanini Collection. A modest opening bid.
