Item Description
Large 23x32" one-sided slick paper sheet issued as a special insert for the "NEW YORK HERALD" circa Christmas 1905 with classic specialty art done by 11 different artists. Comic strip characters dancing happily across the top include: the Wish Twins by W. D. Wilson; a dutch girl by Robert A. Graef; the Tiny Tads by Gustave Verbeck; Buster Brown and Tige by R. F. Outcault; Little Sammy Sneeze, Hungry Henrietta, and Little Nemo by Winsor McCay; happy bear by R. F. Outcault; and a fantasy elephant by Walter Crane. At the center right side are lambs wearing top hats and running behind a monkey representing Wall Street lambs about to be sheared, drawn by political cartoonist W. A. Rogers. The lower right corner has an illustration by Wallace Morgan of a crowd cheering at a football game. The lower left corner has an illustration by Nodherny of medieval lovers walking near flower-filled woods. The center left side has an illustration by Shafer of a busy street at night with blowing sleet. The large center illustration by Otho Cushing features a pretty woman wearing a robe and helmet about to be kissed by an owl as a smiling winged cupid holds mistletoe over her head. Artists have signed or initialled (facsimile) their respective art. Little Nemo had only been running in the Sunday comics a few months when this calendar was issued. Top center margin has an inked inscription but this could be easily matted out. Has scattered wear along the original fold lines. This includes about a dozen small .25 to 1" tears w/tape repairs on the reverse. Has additional lt. margin wear/aging. All art remains bright and clean. Overall Fine. A scarce, classic, and well drawn "jam" page by the top artists on the "NEW YORK HERALD" only issued in the New York City area.  First We've Seen.
