Item Description
First is a scarce political envelope published by J. M. Whitmore & Co., Boston depicting beardless Lincoln above crossed U.S. flags and the motto "The Union, It Must Be Preserved." This is a rare 1860 presidential campaign version that was re-issued by the same publisher for use in the 1864 campaign. That more common example was altered by the addition of a beard and a different motto. Accompanying the Lincoln piece is a companion envelope with the portrait and facsimile signature of Stephen A. Douglas over the motto "True To The Union And The Constitution To The Last." These envelopes measure 3-1/6x5.75" and are in unused condition with no tears, repairs or stains although rear flaps are sealed. Exc.
