Item Description
Dated 1899 sculpture by Samuel Murray, student of famous painter Thomas Eakins. The figure is boxing pose of "Turkey Point" Billy Smith of Philadelphia. Eakins used Smith as model for famous boxing 1899 painting "Between Rounds" now in the Philadelphia Art Museum. Murray's sculpture is dated the same year and sculpture went from Billy Smith himself to his nephew, then to our consignor. The sculpture is 30" tall of Smith in bare clenched hands boxing pose on a rectangular 6.5x17x2.5" tall base. Boldly signed on base top "Murray Copyright 1899." Greenish-dark gray patina over bronze weighing 50 pounds. Murray and Eakins worked together on large scale public commissions. Many of both artists' paintings and sculptures reside in the Philadelphia Art Museum collection. A rare opportunity to acquire a stunning boxing item as well as an important artist's sculpture. Exc.
