Item Description
Eight years ago we offered another example of this interesting and obviously rare ring. It differs from the "standard" Spider ring in two ways. First, the spider image on the ring top never had red enamel applied and the spider image is in silver luster. Second, rather than a solid band, this has adjustable bands. The earliest use of this ring was in 1934 to promote "The Spider" pulp magazine. The "standard" design and this variety were issued again in 1941 as a movie premium to promote "The Spider Returns." On this ring, as well as on the "standard" version, the inner band carries not only the trademark of the maker Uncas but also the inscription "Made In USA." Many manufacturers during this time period added the "USA" notation to their items to designate that the items were not being produced in Japan. The ring sides and base have lost about 1/3 silver luster, but remaining silver and under-lying brass metal color blend nicely with perfectly formed overlapping adjustable bands. The ring top with silver spider centered on black enamel is mint with undamaged enamel and full silver luster on the incised spider image. Overall, near VF and about 10 times rarer than the "standard" version which in itself is extremely scarce.
