Item Description
This incredible "scrapbook" consists of a total of 66 oversized sheets of paper, 11x15" w/ring binder holes on left margins. Pages have a variety of items mounted to them, mostly by means of paper corner fasteners so the various items could be removed if desired. The front cover has mounted typed sheet reading "Treasury Department-Superman War Savings Bond And Stamp Contest January 4-March 31 1943/Presented By The Luddington News Company 4743 Fourth Avenue Detroit Michigan." Luddington was the Detroit distributor of DC Comics. There are 27 letters dated between Oct. 14, 1942 and May 10, 1943 extensively detailing the planning and execution of this campaign w/corerspondence between all parties involved including the Treasury Dept., DC Comics, news agencies, drugstores, movie theaters, etc. Majority of letters are to or from Ivan Luddington, some signed plus two to Harry Donnenfeld, DC's founding father. There are eight dealer inventory forms telling when various unsold magazines could be returned to distributor for credit and each sheet has a different reference to the Superman contest. There are two extensive lists of participants, one for Cunningham drugstores, the other of "dealers" w/their individual addresses indicated. There are two sheets noting prizes awarded to Luddington news drivers, magazine dealers and Cunningham drugstores. There is a single retailer's participation return card. There is one sheet noting contest prizes and rules and another noting a promotion to meet the creators of Superman which was to take place Feb. 13-14. Text includes "They will make charcoal drawings of Superman and will sell war stamps to members of the audience (this by means of autographing Superman books)." There are two copies of "Luddington News," both w/Superman contest covers. One page features three newspaper clippings relating to the contest and Siegel & Schuster's in-person appearance, one has photo of them holding war bond poster w/Superman. Also on this sheet is a small 3x3.5" bw paper which was apparently handed out w/each purchase and features an illustration of Superman w/text "Your Purchase Of War Stamps And Bonds Will Help Stamp Out The Japanazis!" plus facsimile signatures of Siegel & Schuster. These four pieces have been glued to the sheet, not mounted by corner fasteners. The remaining 21 pages have a total of 49 bw glossy photos. Eleven of these are 8x10", the others are smaller snapshots, typically 2x4". The vast majority of these photos are of drugstore window displays featuring war bond-related posters including those featuring Superman. A very extensive photo reference for this contest. There are also two 8x10" photos of Eddie Polo who was hired to pull a two-ton truck tying in w/this contest promotion and showing his "Super Strength." There is one page which has a newspaper clipping w/additional photo of him and headline "Ex-Movie Muscle-Man Boosts Bond Sales." The six related photos we offered in Auction #178 items #2929-30 came from this group and we are now offering all other remaining pages. The scrapbook page sheets have lt. margin aging and wear but for the most part, all contents remain Exc. Unique and a major piece of Superman history.
