Item Description
1.25" shows illustration of speeding steam locomotive with date "1922" printed over smoke coming from the stack along with surrounding text "The Big Rail Road Strike." Reverse backpaper by Phila. Badge. This rare button from the Hake collection is the only example we've seen and it was issued to commemorate the railroad shopmen's strike, by far the largest industrial conflict in the nation's history, when more than 230,000 workers walked out on July 1, 1922. It was also one of the longest strikes lasting more than a year in many places. Communist leader William Z. Foster called the strike "The Greatest Single Defeat Ever Suffered By The Workers Of This Country." Right center has vertical 3/16" hairline cello crack that barely shows in reflected light but with normal viewing is not at all apparent and all else is extremely clean with high gloss. A minor defect on a major rarity. From the Hake collection.
