Item Description
7/8" tall cut-out Liberty head from U.S. 1¢ coin with "Liberty" on her coronet. Small extension with hole for suspension at top. Listed by DeWitt as anti-war party item AW1864-1. Badge is held by cord to 1949 collector-made display card which includes clipped and mounted newspaper ad for the item from November 19, 1863. DeWitt notes "This Was The Official Badge Of The Copperheads." These pieces were made by cutting the Liberty head from the obverse the official United States large copper cent. Most had a pin mounted on the reverse but some were simply holed at the top and strung upon a ribbon. Anti-war newspapers carried advertisements for their sale as a 'Genuine Copperhead Or Badge Of Liberty.' They sold for fifteen cents each or at $80.00 per 1,000. Newspaper ad includes text "Every Person In Favor Of Free Speech, A Free Press, And The Rights Of White Men, Should Have The Badge Of Liberty." Rare and Mint as made. Only example we've ever offered.
