Item Description
Choice color 1.25" reads "Widow Jones Suits Me" and has W&H backpaper first issued in 1900. Backpaper has missing two areas of print which leaves a pair of .25" surface spots, but text 75% complete and cello is Exc. Likely issued to promote New England women's clothing. The Wido Jones was famous 1895 stage play starring May Irwin. In one scene she and co-star John C. Rice kiss. In 1896 they re-enacted the scene for Edison as a short 20-second film loop with close-up titled "The Mysteries Of The Kiss Revealed," becoming the first on-screen kissing couple. The film was denounced as shocking and pornographic and caused the Roman Catholic Church to call for film censorship.
