Item Description
3-3/8x3-3/8x.5" deep box holds medal that is 2-3/8" dia. Box lid reads "RMS Lusitania/Cunard Line-3200 Tons/Sunk On Her Return Journey From The United States By A German Submarine May 7th, 1915." Inside box lid has text including "An Exact Replica Of The Medal Which Was Designed In Germany And Distributed Commemorating The Sinking Of The Lusitania. This Indicates The True Feeling The War Lords Endeavor To Stimulate, And Is Proof Positive That Such Crimes Are Not Merely Regarded Favorably, But Are Given Every Encouragement In The Land Of Kultur/The Lusitania Was Sunk By A German Submarine On May 7th, 1915. She Had On Board At The Time 1900 Passengers And Crew, Of Whom 1198 Perished." Carl Goetz of Germany minted the medal (which has the incorrect date of May 5 rather than May 7). It shows the Lusitania, its bow slipping beneath the Atlantic Ocean. On the reverse a skeletal figure of death is shown selling tickets from the Cunard Line ticket booth and a long line of customers glows off the medal. Many medals turned up in Britain. The British then copied these. This is one of the English copies in its original box from 1915. Text on medal is in German. Box shows wear but hinged lid is intact. Overall VF.
