Item Description
This ring was first offered as a premium in the March,1934 issue of "The Spider" pulp magazine. That ring had a non-adjustable band and the top featured a red enamel spider outlined in silver luster laying flush and surrounded by a black enamel background. The ring was made by Uncas. Over the years, and as listed in the Hake Pop Culture Guide, we came across three examples with the spider image in silver luster against black enamel and with adjustable bands. Those rings also name the maker Uncas. Here is a first seen third variety. The ring is size 6.5 with non-adjustable bands and with inner band carrying the letter "U" and arrow design mark of Uncas. The side panels have geometric design shaped something like a spear point that points downward on all three varieties. The distinguishing features of this first seen third variety are that the black background is paint not enamel. In addition the spider is in raised metal, not laying flush with the background. In addition the spider is done in red paint but there is no silver luster outlining of the image. There are a few specks of paint off the spider's raised center body and a few near microscopic hairlines off the legs but overall the red paint is about 90% complete, the black paint is 100% complete and the silvered brass base is essentially Mint. Comes with small red cardboard box with felt insert and this box is identical to that which held the standard version Spider ring as issued in 1934. Small bits of red color off the narrow edges of the box but in very sound and Fine condition. Rare and the only example known to us.
