Item Description
The first 13 buttons are from a set of 18 issued sometime before June 1897. These were offered as a set in a Whitehead & Hoag catalog under the title "Regulation College Buttons." The set of 18 sold for 35 cents. In order the colleges represented by these 13 are: Amherst, Columbia College, Dickinson, Jefferson, Johns Hopkins University, Lafayette, University Of Princeton, Rutgers, University Of California, University Of Pennsylvania, Vassar, Wesleyan, and Yale. Buttons missing are Harvard, Cornell, Lehigh, Normal, Virginia University. Few have a small bit of surface wear off the W&H papers. Dickinson has a little fade to the red and Yale has faint stain along top edge and some fade to the blue. Extremely clean group and quite scarce. With these come two plastic sheets holding 37 buttons, most 1.25" naming various colleges. These are largely from the 1930s. They are stapled in a coin holder held in the plastic page. Many do not have a spring pin in the reverse but they are standard sizes and should not be difficult to add a pin. Only a couple tiny age dots on a few. Vast majority are NM displaying Mint.
