Item Description
"Tarzan Of The Apes" was written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the first in a series of books about the title character Tarzan. First published in the pulp magazine "All-Story Magazine" in Oct. 1912, the first book edition was published in 1914. This is first state of the first edition, 5x7.5" hardcover bound in original maroon publisher's cloth binding w/gilt titles. Published by A.C. McClurg June 6, 1914. There are three states of the first edition, all three have the publisher's name printed on the spine and on the title page. The first and second state books each weigh about 1.25 lbs. due to using a heavier stock paper. "W.F. Hall Printing Co. - Chicago" is printed in Old English typeface on the copyright page, whereas the third state uses Gothic typeface. Another difference between the first and second state is that there is an acorn symbol printed on the spine above McClurg's name on the second state. This first state, first edition does not feature acorn symbol. Spine shows moderate wear w/horizontal splits at top/bottom and 5/8" split along middle front spine edge. Covers exhibit corner tip wear w/some scattered edge wear and some scuffing. Front cover has two small spots of what appears to be paint. Inside front cover has surface paper wear from erasure of owner's name w/another owner's name in green ink below this. Title page has two previous owner's name crossed out in ink w/"Good" notation. Pages have some scattered handling wear/soiling but remain tight. VG overall. Comes w/high quality dust jacket facsimile by John Anthony Miller Studio. McClurg printed a total of 10,000 first edition copies of "Tarzan Of The Apes," w/approximations of 5,000 of the first state printing. A classic book and a must for any Tarzan collector.
