Item Description
12x19.75". "Allied Printing Memphis, Tenn. 36" union bug at bottom center. This thin cardboard placard was carried by Memphis sanitation workers during a march led by Coretta Scott King five days after her husbands assassination. It is a companion piece to the iconic "I Am A Man" placards carried in the days leading up to and during King's fateful arrival in Memphis. Corners and top are trimmed, creasing throughout, staining and a pair of less than two inch tears on left side and another at top affecting the first "O" in "Honor". Just Good. Despite the obvious condition issues this piece displays as a worn relic of one of the most turbulent moments in recent American history and a defining moment of the civil rights movement. This is an instance where the condition issues are eclipsed by the rarity and overwhelming historical importance.
