Item Description
15x21.5" newspaper four-page spread from an unidentified newspaper features full page ad for "Tarzan In Color - By Edgar Rice Burroughs" and features wonderful full body image of Tarzan swinging on vine as rendered by artist Rex Maxon, who would assume art duties (following Hal Foster) on the strip upon its debut on March 15, 1931. Burroughs was unhappy w/Maxon's work, his complaints resulting in Foster being brought back and taking over the Sunday page art duties in Sept. on that year, w/Maxon concentrating on the daily strip. This arrangement continued until May 2, 1937. Pages feature Maxon's first three Sunday pages (March 15, 22 and 29, 1931) on interior and back page w/front of page noting "Original Adventures Written Direct For Color Page - Never Used In Any Tarzan Strip, Book, Serial Or Movie." Bottom has United Feature Syndicate - Metropolitan Newspaper Feature Service name/address. Folded into quarters and evenly aged w/a few archival tape repairs inside. Fine overall. Rare and first we've seen in our 49 years. Great promotional piece.
