Item Description
1.5" button with union bug back stamp. Pair of tiny 1/8" cello splits on the back along the collet and the front surface is just a hair concave, probably as made. Also some small air dots in reflected light but no stain and with high gloss. VF. Pictured is "Jay Michael" with quotation below "I Listen To The J-Bird". He hosted a weekly TV dance show and was one of the early promoters of rock who played "Race Music" in 1952 on station WCAE-AM. His success caused Philadelphia radio station WFIL to send its young DJ Dick Clark to Pittsburgh. In Clark's autobiography he wrote "They Sent Me To Pittsburgh To Sit In A Hotel Room To Listen To A DJ Named Jay Michael. For Three Days, I Sat There Listening To Jay Michael Play The Hits." Clark went back to Philly and told his bosses he could imitate the same style and asked them to let him play 'Race' records by African American artists. His show became a Philadelphia hit and he began to host Bandstand in 1956. A rare and limited local issue historic music button.
