Item Description
17x22". In July of 1969 Emory traveled to Algiers, Algeria w/Kathleen Cleaver to meet Eldrige Cleaver and participate in the Pan-African Cultural Festival. The storefront Afro-American Center headquarters was covered in Emory's art and posters were available inside for the crowds attending from all over Europe and Africa. The lack of traditional small Black Panther logo and small text places this poster at the event. An example is featured opposite the title page in Black Panther The Revolutionary Art Of Emory Douglas and can be seen, along w/others in this auction found in lot #465 and lot #467, on page 63 in images published in the Black Panther Community News Service recapping the festival. Emory's art was a major hit in Algiers serving to quickly transcend the language barrier. The moment serves as one of the best representations of the importance of his work's ability to communicate the Black Panther Party's message. Pin hole in each corner and a less than 1/8x1/4" surface paper lift in the black field diagonally to the left of text "Emory '67". Otherwise only minor handling wear, VF.
