Item Description
1.5" tall with each piece on the reverse marked "Sterling" although the metallic finish on some of the front areas is brass. Front includes initials "AWS" and these stand for Aircraft Warning Service which was organized May, 1941. On the east coast the group was under the auspices of the Army Air Forces 1st Interceptor Command. These words and initials also appear on the front of this piece. Top hanger bar reads "For Merit" and second bar reads "Five Hundred Hours." The person awarded this was one of many people manning thousands of observation posts established on the east coast from the top of Maine to the tip of Florida and inland to the western slopes of the Appalachian Mountains. Similar posts on the west coast ranged from upper Washington to lower California. Trivial finish wear. Rare and extremely Fine.
