Item Description
5.75x8.5" hardcover book by Fredric Wertham and published by Rinehart & Company, Inc. 1954. This is the first version/first state of the book complete w/dust jacket and bibliography page intact. First edition is noted by "R" colophone on publication page. Only a few copies were released w/the "Bibliographical Note" page intact at the end of the book before this page was physically removed by the publisher after the comic publishers listed demanded its removal. Example offered here is one of the few editions to survive w/the bibliography page intact. Arguably the most infamous tome about comic books, this book almost ended the comic book industry w/the author's dissertation on how comic books were directly linked to juvenile delinquency and the degradation of morals among young people. Some of the book points state that comic books "Are An Invitation To Illiteracy, Create An Atmosphere Of Cruelty And Deceit, Stimulate Unwholesome Fantasies, Suggests Criminal Or Sexually Abnormal Ideas, Create A Readiness For Temptation, Suggest Forms Of Delinquent Impulse May Take And Supply Details Of Technique" among many others. Several comic books of the time were cited along w/illustration from "Phantom Lady" #17 and "Reform School Girl." Book is complete w/DJ, which has corner clip (price) to inside front cover at top. DJ shows obvious wear w/edge tears. dust soiling, aging and some scattered spots of aging/staining on front covers. Heavy wear to DJ at top of spine, w/large pieces missing. DJ is just Good. Book itself shows some edge aging to hardcover and corner tip wear. Binding separation inside front cover, though binding remains intact. Fine overall. Interior pages have some lt. aging but are still VF/Exc. overall. A very historically significant publication in comic book history.
