Item Description
9x12x4.75" deep gingham fabric-covered cardboard box contains replica pair of the ruby slippers worn by Judy Garland in the 1939 MGM classic "The Wizard Of Oz." Box is clean and Exc. Western Costume Co. created the original ruby slippers worn by Garland in the film. As is customary for important props, a number of pairs were made for the film. Five pairs are known to have survived; one pair is on display in the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC and another pair was stolen in Aug. 2005 and has yet to be recovered. Due to the extreme rarity of these slippers and their iconic stature, the original ruby slippers are now considered among the most treasured and valuable items of film memorabilia. During the film's 50th Anniversary in 1989, Western Costume produced the only authorized reproductions. Cast from Judy Garland's original foot mold and completely sequined and jeweled, the reproduction slippers were nearly identical to the originals. Western planned a limited edition of 500 pairs at $5,000 each, but halted the project after producing just 22 pairs. One of these pairs fetched $35,000 at a Nov. 2013 auction. Each pair had "Western Costume Co. - Holywood [sic]" tag sewn inside each slipper w/typed edition number and "Name - Judy Garland 'The Wizard Of Oz'" text. This example has "22/500" edition number, making it the last pair produced by Western before they ceased production. Slippers feature beautiful ruby red sequins and red plastic stones on bows w/suede leather lining. A couple sequins have some wear to red color but o/w slippers are Exc. Comes w/letter from Eastern Costume Co. representative telling the history of the shoes as well as a LOA from Garland's daughter Liza Minnelli and her then-husband David Gest (w/printed signatures) on "Gotta Have It! Auctions Inc." letterhead stating "The Personal Property Of Liza And David - Letter Of Authenticity."
