Item Description
10.75x12.75" frame w/easel back contains premium that was briefly issued in late 1939/early 1940 in "Action Comics" and "Superman" comic books and was obtained by recruiting three friends to join the Supermen of America Club. This large 5.5" dia. emblem/patch is one of the very earliest Superman premiums and was originally advertised as a "Superman Emblem." Unlike other similar patches which are just felt, this is made of two thin layers of felt and sandwiched between these layers is a thin sheet of cardboard which gives the patch a high degree of stiffness. Front has choice silk-screened design featuring classic image of Superman breaking chains surrounded by text "Supermen Of America - Action Comics." Patch was originally attached to jacket and was carefully removed and mounted w/archival materials and new thread to an acid-free backing board that then had custom-made collage frame featured page 6 from "Superman" #1 (the 1978 reprint) mounted under UV glass. Patch has moderate aging but is free of creases and has just hairline to area left of Superman's arm and across "S" chest emblem. Patch retains strong design/color. VG as mounted in attractive display (can also be easily removed if so desired). In light of recent extraordinary sales of "Action Comics" #1, it is important to note that there are far fewer of this patch known (less than 10) as opposed to existing copies of "Action Comics" #1. Listed in The Price Guide To Pop Culture Memorabilia by Ted Hake w/values in Fine of $5,500 and NM $11,000. One of the rarest and most desirable Superman premiums.
