Item Description
Three buttons are 1.25" and the larger is 1.75". Group begins with historic button picturing two men and two women with text on the side of the vehicle "The Montgomery Ward & Co. Electric Horseless Carriage." This is the only button known which includes the term "Horseless Carriage." Complete with back paper, often missing, which shows the company guarantee. Bottom curl names maker W&H plus an 1896 patent date. A beautiful example NM displaying Mint. Next is button picturing driver who later became NASCAR commissioner. Button reads "Cannon Ball Baker Club/Member." Button is c. 1920 at the time of his fame for point to point drives often sponsored by motorcycle or car makers. He was the victor in the 1909 first race held at the newly-built Indianapolis speedway. His nickname came from famous 1914 trans-continental drive and was derived from the cannon ball train of Illinois Central made famous by Casey Jones. Next button showing speeding race car was issued for the "George Vanderbilt Cup Race" held in the 1930s. Among the five flags shown is one with the German swastika. Last pictures the 1939 Hudson. All are NM displaying Mint.
