Item Description
7/8" button without dot pattern. Reverse pin holds flag bow behind the back paper naming W&H along with a Philadelphia office location. Because of the fabric, the paper has numerous small tears but vast majority remains. Crawford was known as 'The Poet Scout'. He was a Civil War veteran and served as a scout in the West. He gained national fame following a daring ride of 350 miles in six days to carry dispatches from Fort Laramie for the New York Herald to tell the news of the victory by General George Cook against the Indian Chief American Horse at the Battle of Slim Buttes in 1876. Later, from 1893 to 1898, Crawford built a national reputation as an entertainer in music halls and stages all over the country lecturing on the West. Button is likely from one of those appearances. One of only three examples known to us. Cello has four pinpoint tan dots on extreme left edge but rest is clean and glossy. VF.
