Item Description
7.5x12.5". Published by "Carleton & Harvey" out of "Newport, N.H." the Whip And Spur was a pro-Democratic newspaper published during the 1840 to 1860 campaigns. First cartoon is "A Pictorial Illustration Of The Hard Cider Campaign Of 1840" w/image of Harrison, in Generals uniform, sitting atop a hard cider barrel as he is carried in a parade. Paraders carry banners including one reading "Prevention- Take Care Of The Rich And They Will Take Care Of The Poor." Second cartoon is "A Pictorial Illustration Of The Clay Campaign Of 1844" w/Clay seated in a large chair at the White House w/his foot on the "Constitution" while holding a gun and exclaiming "These Are My Arguments!" Text at bottom references support for "James K. Polk." Reverse has columns for signing up new subscribers. Tiny hole affecting the "AR" in "Hard Cider" above top cartoon. Seven horizontal fold lines w/a 1" separation on the right edge at the very bottom of the Harrison cartoon and a pair of less than .25" separations on each side of the bottom third. These do not interrupt graphics. Fine. Paper remains clean, lacking typical staining.
