Item Description
27.25x41.75" poster printed by the US Government c. 1917 and used for recruitment. Features stunning artwork by Harry R. Hopps (1869-1937) depicting the horrors of a potential German invasion of American soil, showing a wild-eyed and snarling gorilla w/upturned German mustache and spiked pickelhaube German "Militarism" helmet upon its head holding a bloodied club marked "Kultur" in one hand and a swooning bare-breasted American woman in the other. Both hands are bloodied as well and ground under gorilla's feet has "America" name, which the gorilla symbolically stands upon. European war ruins can be seen in distant bkg. across span of water representing the ocean. Bold "Destroy This Brute" text across top and large "Enlist" text at bottom used in conjunction w/the rather livid art urges American men to enlist to stem the threat of German invasion. "Enlist" text has scarce "U.S. Army - 660 Market St." (San Francisco, CA army recruiting office) overprint address and bottom margin has "This Campaign Made Possible By" text w/nine San Francisco lithography/printing companies listed. Poster was once folded and has now been linen-mounted and has had some minor restoration, none of it to main image area. Restoration includes work along margins, at margin corners and to two spots (.25" and .5") at first letter of "Enlist" at bottom. "This" text at bottom margin has also been touched-up. Another area that was touched-up is 5/8x.75" left of gorilla's elbow and tiny spot just to right of last letter of "Destroy" text at top right. We show before and after restoration images in our online listing to allow you to really see just how little was done to the poster's art area. As linen-mounted now displays Exc. and is sure to become to centerpiece of any militaria collection. This poster has realized between $10,000 and $20,000 in the past for examples w/much more restoration than seen on this example. One of the most desirable war posters of all time.
