Item Description
Carcharodon megalodon is an extinct species of shark that lived approximately 28 to 1.5 million years ago, during the Cenozoic Era (late Oligocene to early Pleistocene). Megalodon is regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators in vertebrate history, fossil remains suggest that this giant shark reached a maximum length of 52-67 feet, and also affirm that it had a worldwide distribution. The open jaws of this massive ancient shark were large enough to drive a small car through when open. Scientists suggest that Megalodon looked like a larger and stockier version of the modern day Great White Shark. Megalodon is represented in the fossil record primarily by teeth and fossilized remains of the vertebral column as Megalodon's skeleton was formed of cartilage rather than bone, resulting in mostly poorly preserved fossil specimens. The most common Megalodon fossils are its teeth. Characteristics include - triangular shape, heavy-duty structure, large size, fine serrations and visible V-shaped neck. Megalodon teeth can measure over 7" in length, and are the largest in size of any known shark species. We are offering a 6" long specimen which exhibits just lt. loss of fossilized enamel along root edge of the tooth's exterior side and nearly full enamel on its interior side. The tooth's naturally serrated edges are still visible. Tiny 1/8" chip to edge near tip of tooth and tiny flake to tip. Wonderful coloring. A tooth from one of the oceans' top all-time predators is a must have.
