Item Description

The Griesbaum firm was located in the Black Forest and became famous in the late 1800s for their singing  birds and other automated musical devices such as this quite large (19" to lamp top) whistling man. While the man is obviously drunk, unlike most of the carved drunks (and hobos)  produced by the firm, this man is in formal evening dress with top hat, bow tie, and a (removable) 5.5" walking stick in the hand of the arm he uses to steady himself with the lamp post.  Back of the base has in silver color the company logo of a bird above three mountain peaks with flanking initials "K.G" and below "Germany".  Wood cover under the base opens to hold pair of "D" batteries to power the light bulb contained in metal lamp frame with deep red plastic windows. Man's wood back comes off to view the intricate gearing, brass whistle tube and paper bellows all working perfectly. Comes with a probably not original but large brass key that fits the shaft perfectly.
The man is carved with pursed lips and when lever on back is depressed, his head turns left and right, the lamp lights, and the mechanism produces a 13 second rendition of "Show Me The Way To Go Home". The only damage is a small ripple dent and paint loss to .5 x .75 back right corner of the lamp lid.
New batteries included- if light does not light, make sure batteries are seated to make contact. Overall Exc.
